Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain as I embarked on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy self was familiar with. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This can be daunting when beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a considerable worry. On my first day moving into my accommodation, right before the term started, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to go out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most valuable friendships here at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I glean from this? It’s important to take a step forward at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or comfortable, there’s no need to fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting. Additionally, be authentic. With a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the amount of coursework and the complexity of the material. There was a clear increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even steeper increase from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can impact your confidence; you might feel inadequate in comparison to your peers. What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely others feel the same way. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the available support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with staff members, which is priceless. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the available support. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this past year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I’m never on my own and has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
