By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the more frightening elements of commencing university, and for potential students, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my lodging, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Now, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships here at the university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with light conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? It’s advisable to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in engaging with others. I also found that being true to yourself is essential. With such a wide array of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who connect with you.

An additional hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant increase from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can impact your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everybody is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out to your peers and instructors for assistance!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are amazing. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and maintain consistent communication throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are many opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best investments you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the help available. You cannot have too much support!

Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It’s revealed to me that I’m never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
