Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I can recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of entering university, and if you’re considering this as a prospective student, it might be your primary worry. On my first day moving into my dorm, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet new people. However, today I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What did I take away from this? I learned that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not fully prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you embody one trait, make it being yourself. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to discover those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you there are others who feel the same. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace during the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to establish connections with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to get to know the staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support provided. There’s no such thing as too much assistance!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated through the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
