In October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re considering attending, it might be your primary concern. On my initial day settling into my dorm, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too daunted to venture out and socialize. However, today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at the university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that making the initial move at the year’s start is always the most beneficial action. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to break the ice and facilitate connections with others. I also recognized that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse range of people across the program and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper rise from the first term to the second. Being in such a competitive environment can take a toll on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. Several things aided me through this, one of which is the reassurance that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can nearly guarantee that others are grappling with it as well. So, seek assistance. This could be the most critical lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for guidance from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges faced by students. They show understanding and maintain regular communication throughout the year concerning our dilemmas. I didn’t really tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I embarked on one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

To conclude, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, often lack foundation and can be mitigated with the support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment despite challenges like exams and deadlines.
