By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to commence my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unknown was not something my formerly introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and enjoyment. But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This can be quite overwhelming when embarking on university life, and for prospective students, it may be a considerable worry. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Yet today, I can proudly share that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships during my time at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all stemming from casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this experience? It’s beneficial to make a move at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities will help you to connect with others. I’ve also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse range of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was managing the academic workload and the difficulty of the content. There was a significant shift from A-levels, and in many ways, an even greater leap from the first semester to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can influence your confidence; you might observe your peers studying and feel out of your depth. Several strategies assisted me through these feelings, one being the awareness that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re puzzled by something, I can nearly assure you that others are as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital insight to gain in your first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain open lines of communication regarding our challenges. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned taking bold steps earlier – I did so by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness about university are typically unfounded and can be mitigated with the supportive resources provided by both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
