Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of transitioning to university, and if you are a future student, it may rank among your greatest concerns. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the start of classes, I remained in my room all day, feeling too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all of which began with light conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I learn? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to meet people who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the amount of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a jump from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that we’re all in the same situation. If you’re puzzled by something, I can nearly assure you that others are confused too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and realize that students may face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing dialogue throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I referenced taking chances before – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this segment of university life is to utilize the support available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated and has shown me how to enjoy my experiences alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
