Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking parts of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all of which initiated with casual conversations with those in comparable circumstances. So, what have I discovered? It’s wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. I’ve also realized that being authentic is crucial. With the variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

Another obstacle was handling the workload and the level of content difficulty. There was a clear jump from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few measures helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If something confuses you, I can almost assure you that others are equally perplexed. So, don’t hesitate to seek support. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous methods to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased with the support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It’s demonstrated that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
