Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment! But what insights has this year brought, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating trials was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it might be among your foremost worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, though, I can affirm that I have developed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I discern? I discovered that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! Numerous ice-breaking chances and activities will aid you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting isn’t always favorable for your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re struggling with a topic, I can almost assure you that others are facing the same issues. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter obstacles. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I embraced one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to build rapport with the faculty members, which is highly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get to know staff, and it’s absolutely one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. It’s impossible to have too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both pre and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to have fun alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
