In October 2022, ten months ago, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the academic year gone by, I recognize a path filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what have I discovered, and where stand I now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of entering university, and if you are a potential student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day of settling into my accommodations, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to step out and introduce myself to others. Now, I am pleased to report that I have built some of the closest friendships I could have hoped for at this university and in this program. I have found a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with those experiencing similar situations. So, what did I figure out? I discovered that taking a chance at the year’s start is always worthwhile. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, that’s okay! There will be many ice-breaker moments and events for you to engage with others. I also recognized how vital it is to be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and the university, you are sure to connect with like-minded people.
An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a definite leap from A-levels, and, in some respects, an even greater jump from the first semester to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and start to feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something isn’t clear, I can almost assure you that others are feeling the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for support!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They are understanding and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier on—I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to build relationships with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary insight from this aspect of university is to seize the help that’s available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased by the various support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
