Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my academic journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I’m proud to say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here in this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what insight did I gain? I learned that it’s advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events to aid in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With such a variety of people across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was a clear increase in difficulty compared to A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What supported me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same circumstances. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might very well be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This segue leads me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges that students confront. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have an excess of assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
