In October 2022, ten months back, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was unfamiliar territory for my previously timid and reserved self. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights did this year impart, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days before the semester started, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say I’ve made some of the finest friends here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you aren’t quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to help you engage with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With the diversity of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge revolved around the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can occasionally shake your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel subpar. A few strategies helped me conquer this sensation, one being the reminder that we are all in the same situation. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that others are in the same boat. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to internalize in the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next topic. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students encounter challenges. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our worries. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking risks earlier – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are multiple avenues to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!

In conclusion, this year illustrated that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased through the various support mechanisms offered by staff and fellow students. It taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even in the face of stressors such as exams and deadlines.
