A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the deep end wasn’t something my former shy and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges I encountered was making connections. This is certainly one of the more nerve-racking aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your principal worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the new term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Yet, as I sit here now, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and all it took was a bit of small chat with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I figured out that it’s always best to take a chance at the year’s beginning. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be a multitude of ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be authentic. There are so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge I had to face was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experience. If something isn’t making sense, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a few others who also find it confusing. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from both your peers and the faculty!

That brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students can struggle. They relate to students and keep in constant communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really utilize the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is an extraordinarily beneficial step. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance being offered to you. You can never have too much support!

On a broader scale, this year has imparted to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are almost always illogical and can be eased through the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment amid the stressors like exams and deadlines.
