Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Engineering and Materials Science as a first-year student. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are a future student reading this, it may be one of your major worries. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, I can proudly say today that I have made some wonderful friends, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with small conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? It’s wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and activities designed to help you engage with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a diverse group of people in the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another obstacle was the challenging workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can negatively impact your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel not good enough. A few strategies aided me in overcoming this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares this experience. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that there are many others who also don’t. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t really make use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had earlier. As I mentioned about taking chances earlier – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role helped me connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous methods to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the help provided. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to have fun despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
