Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come as I began my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most daunting hurdles was forming friendships. This often stands out as one of the most frightening aspects of starting college, and if you’re considering this as a potential student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to step out and introduce myself. However, today, I can assertively claim that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I have ever experienced, here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I uncover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking activities and events are available to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse group of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to find those who you can relate to.
Another challenge involved handling the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be trying for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost guarantee others feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most essential lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty for assistance!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge the challenges students encounter. They empathize and keep in constant communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking chances – at the year’s beginning, I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best moves you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this university aspect is to take advantage of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
All in all, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the various support options provided by both faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment even amid stresses such as exams and deadlines.
