Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not natural for my previously shy and introverted self. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal growth, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of embarking on university life, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it could be among your top concerns. On my move-in day, a few days ahead of the semester’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to venture out and greet others. Sitting here now, I can assertively claim I’ve found some of the best friends I have ever known, here at this university and within this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I learned that it is important to take that initial plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, do not fret! There will be abundant ice-breaker chances and events to help you connect with others. I also found that if you can embrace one thing, it’s to be authentic. With a wide variety of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter people like yourself.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in some ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors aided me in overcoming those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experiences. If you’re confused about something, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, reach out for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next topic. The staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to student struggles and keep in touch with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the support services until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. Earlier, I mentioned taking leaps – I did seize one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to get acquainted with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of support!

Overall, this year has highlighted for me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be alleviated through the multitude of support choices provided by staff and fellow students. It has illustrated to me that I am never alone and has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures such as exams and deadlines.
