Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and fun! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
One of the first and most daunting challenges was forming friendships. This is often one of the most intimidating parts of beginning university, and if you’re an upcoming student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days ahead of the term kicking off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to step outside and mingle with others. Today, though, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the onset of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate your connections with others. I also recognized that being your authentic self is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that there are others who also do not. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out for support from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They relate to us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our worries. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I would have done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the help that’s available. There’s never too much assistance!
In conclusion, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has illustrated that I’m never isolated and imparted how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
