Approximately ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about my future as I embarked on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a newcomer. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back, I perceive a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting components of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days ahead of the term, I remained in my room for the entire day, too uneasy to step out and engage with others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the finest friendships during my time at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with those in comparable situations. What have I gleaned? It’s wise to take a chance right at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breakers and activities will be available to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who share your interests.

Another significant challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a marked increase compared to A-levels, and an even more substantial jump from the first to the second term. Existing in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What supported me was the realization that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is perhaps the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for help from both peers and faculty!

This segues into my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show empathy towards us and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns. Although I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s among the best decisions you can make! My main takeaway is to seize the opportunities for assistance available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness about university are often unfounded and can be alleviated with the support available from both faculty and fellow students. It has revealed that I am never isolated and has taught me how to relish my experiences despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
