Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. As a first-year student, I was preparing to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved personality was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a period of personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be among your primary concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room out of fear to exit and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I have ever experienced, right here at this university in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in small talk with others in similar predicaments. So, what was my takeaway? I realized that it’s advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to meet people who resonate with you.

Another difficulty I encountered was managing the workload and complexity of the content. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in this type of environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you’re confused about something, I can nearly guarantee several others are equally perplexed. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and staff!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I previously mentioned the importance of taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by serving as a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be eased by the numerous support resources accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to enjoy my experience alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
