By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening parts of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, it might be your top worry. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve found some of the most amazing friends here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what’s my takeaway? It’s advisable to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. I’ve also learned that being true to yourself is vital. With such a diverse group of people in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and an even more considerable shift from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can impact your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was keeping in mind that everyone is facing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, others likely don’t either. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This is possibly the most crucial lesson in the first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is invaluable. There are countless ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that nervous feelings regarding university are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It’s demonstrated that I am never alone and has taught me how to enjoy myself even amidst the stress from exams and deadlines.
