Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This aspect of commencing university is certainly one of the more formidable parts, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be a concern for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room because I was too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, reflecting today, I can confidently affirm that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with initiating small talks with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a leap at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker opportunities and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also recognized that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. There are numerous diverse individuals throughout the program and university; you’re sure to encounter people like you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always easy on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me conquer that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who also don’t get it. So, seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out for assistance from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and keep in ongoing contact with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps initially; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to meet the staff, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to leverage the support that’s provided to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!
Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone, and it’s illuminated how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
