Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about embarking on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Engaging in something unfamiliar was not typical for my previously reserved nature. Looking back over the past academic year, I recognize a path of development, hurdles, and enjoyment. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently a major worry for new university students. On my initial day of moving into my residence hall, I stayed in my room, feeling too daunted to socialize. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the greatest friends during my time at university. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all through engaging in casual conversations with my classmates. The key takeaway? Take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to help you connect. Be yourself, and you’ll meet people who resemble you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels, particularly from the first to the second term, was considerable. It’s easy to feel inadequate when observing others study, but keep in mind that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear to you, it likely is for others as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This is vital in your first year—reach out to classmates and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They aim for your success and recognize students’ challenges, keeping communication open throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later on, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I did take a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to engage with the faculty—a beneficial opportunity. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and this is one of the most advantageous actions you can take. Take full advantage of the resources available; you can never receive too much help!

This year has revealed to me that feelings of apprehension regarding university are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support of faculty and peers. I’ve realized I’m never truly alone and learned to enjoy myself in spite of the pressures from exams and deadlines.
