Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Daring to step into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved persona was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I see a journey full of personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gathered this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was cultivating friendships. This certainly ranks among the more daunting aspects of initiating university life, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I felt too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Sitting here now, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in light conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you bond with others. I also realized that if you can be one thing, be genuine. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re destined to meet those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge I had to navigate was the academic workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some regards, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can practically assure you that there are at least a few others who also don’t comprehend it. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to adopt in your first year. Solicit help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face challenges. They empathize with us and engage in ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I took one at the onset of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have too much!

In broad terms, this year has highlighted that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be alleviated through the ample support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
