Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not typical for my formerly shy and reserved nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a considerable amount of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student reading this, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my dorm, just days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the entirety of the day in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and meet others. Nevertheless, today, I can assuredly say I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships here at the university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the year’s onset. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking activities designed to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that being true to oneself is essential. With so many diverse individuals within the program and the university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and even more so from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can test your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. What assisted me was recalling that everyone shares similar experiences. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to connect with staff, and it’s among the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have an excessive amount of assistance!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be alleviated with the numerous support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has enlightened me that I’m never on my own and taught me how to have fun despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
