Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reticent self was ready for. Looking back, I can recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of entering university, and if you are a future student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Reflecting on this today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best relationships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I find out? It’s always wise to take a chance at the start of the academic year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker activities and gatherings to aid you in meeting others. I also discovered that being authentic is crucial. With so many varied individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone shares the same struggles. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that others are puzzled too. Therefore, do seek assistance. This might be the most vital skill to acquire in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to flourish and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy towards us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had sooner. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I made one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary insight from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this past year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It made me realize that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
