About ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of fun! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome aspects of embarking on university life, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it may be among your largest worries. On my initial day moving into my dorm, a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step outside and introduce myself to others. However, today, I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with light conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I realize? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the start of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, do not fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and opportunities to engage with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With a myriad of diverse people throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with who you are.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. Several factors supported me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others also find it perplexing. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to internalize in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter challenges. They are understanding and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not having utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking chances at the onset; I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support you’re provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be mitigated through the various support avenues available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
