Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was set to commence my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not an experience my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you are a potential student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes began, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, too frightened to step out and introduce myself. However, I can now confidently assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had here at this university and in this course. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking that initial leap at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find others who share your interests.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging to your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something doesn’t make sense, I can almost guarantee that others are in the same boat. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Ask for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I referred to taking leaps previously – I took a significant step at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to build rapport with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it is certainly one of the best moves you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to leverage the assistance you’re provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated by the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
