By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is often one of the most daunting components of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it might be among your greatest concerns. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Today, however, I can confidently declare that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with some casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what have I learned? I discovered it’s always beneficial to take a leap at the year’s onset. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody anything, be genuine. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to meet people like you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few aspects helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that there are others who feel the same way. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to triumph and recognize that students face struggles. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to get to know the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the multitude of support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has showed me that I’m never alone, and it has demonstrated how to embrace enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
