Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a rookie student. Diving into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved character was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is usually one of the most daunting aspects of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day in my room, too nervous to step outside and introduce myself. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned it’s always advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody anything, be yourself. With such a variety of individuals across the program and university, you’re likely to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a higher bar compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being suddenly placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things assisted me in overcoming this sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same journey. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are in the same situation. So, reach out for help. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in the first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They truly desire your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious emotions, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the extensive support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
