Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This truly is one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it could be one of your main worries. On my first day settling into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room because I was too shy to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with certainty that I’ve forged some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve established a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was a bit of casual conversation with those in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a leap at the start of the year. If you’re not feeling entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker moments and events designed to facilitate interactions with others. I also learned that above all, you should be yourself. With so many diverse individuals in the program and university, you’ll surely find people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors helped me combat that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experience. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that several others are also puzzled. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to develop in the first year. Don’t hesitate to request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps at the beginning; I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with staff, and it’s undeniably one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the support being offered. You can never have too much help!

In general, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased with the numerous support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to enjoy myself while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
