Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I realize it has been a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what lessons have I acquired this year, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and greet others. But now, sitting here today, I’m pleased to affirm that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with trivial conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if there’s anything to be, be genuine. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find your tribe.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something remains unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee that many others are in the same boat. So, do not hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial skill to grasp in your first year. Seek support from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by serving as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s definitely one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support offered to you. You can never have an excess of help!
All in all, this year has imparted the lesson that anxious feelings, both preemptively and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated through the numerous support systems available from staff and fellow students. It’s demonstrated to me that I’m never isolated and how to have fun amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
