Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my dorm, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day holed up in my room, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself. Today, however, I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known at this university and in this program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this experience? I discovered that it’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, just be yourself. With the array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to find people who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was unquestionably a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggle. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you there are others who also don’t understand it. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most vital lesson to learn in the first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to get to know the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best moves you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this dimension of university life is to capitalize on the support that is made available to you. You can never have an excess of that!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has revealed how to find enjoyment alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
