Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I geared up to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was an experience my formerly shy self wasn’t familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often a significant worry for newcomers to university. On my initial day at my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I remained in my room, too fearful to introduce myself. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here, creating a second family at Imperial. It all began with casual chats with others in comparable situations. I discovered that taking a chance at the outset is essential. If you’re hesitant, don’t fret—there are countless ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections. Be authentic, and you’ll encounter like-minded individuals.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a stark transition from A-levels, and an even more significant one from the first term to the second. It can be challenging for your self-esteem, but keep in mind that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, others probably are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This is crucial in your first year—reach out for support from peers and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are aware of the challenges involved. They keep in touch with us regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t utilize pastoral support until later, but I regret not doing so earlier. I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which helped me connect with faculty, providing a valuable experience. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with faculty, and this is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. Utilize the available assistance—you can never receive too much!

This year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety about university are often unfounded and can be eased with the support offered by faculty and peers. I’ve come to understand that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
