Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of starting university, and for those considering this path, it may be a significant worry. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve built some of the most cherished friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the start of the year is crucial. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker events designed to help you bond with others. Furthermore, if there’s one thing to be, it’s authentic. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and an even bigger transition from the first to the second term. Being in such a demanding environment can shake your self-assurance; witnessing others studying might make you feel inadequate. What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson from my first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!
The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to flourish and recognize the difficulties students encounter. They show understanding and maintain ongoing dialogue concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position has allowed me to connect with the staff, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!
This year has shown me that feelings of nervousness before and during university are typically baseless and can be alleviated with the support from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
