Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Leaping into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of fun! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This often ranks as one of the most daunting elements of entering university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be your chief concern. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day confined to my room because I felt too daunted to step out and meet others. However, today I can affirm that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what lesson have I absorbed? I’ve learned that it’s always beneficial to take that initial leap at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with peers. I’ve also understood that if there’s one thing to be, it’s authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who share your interests.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was significant, and in some respects, the increase from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one of which was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you there are others who do not grasp it either. Thus, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson one can learn in the first year. Reach out to fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the supportive resources until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both in the lead-up to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has illustrated that I am never isolated, and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
