Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved nature was accustomed to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it may be one of your top worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day retreating to my room because I felt too intimidated to venture out and greet others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it only required some light conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I come to realize? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling slightly unprepared or uncomfortable, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to mingle with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be genuine. There’s a vast array of individuals in the program and university; you’re sure to encounter others like yourself.
Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Some factors helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly guarantee there are several others who also don’t comprehend it. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Seek help from your peers and the staff!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They sympathize with students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding any issues. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to take full advantage of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!
Generally, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be alleviated by the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It’s demonstrated to me that I’m never alone, and it has guided me on how to enjoy my time even amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
