Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I notice a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more challenging facets of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day of moving into my housing, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively say I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever made at this university and within this course. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the outset of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate your connections with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a wide array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to find kindred spirits.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can undermine your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors aided me in coping with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can nearly guarantee that others are as well. So, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding toward students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned before about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance being provided. You can never receive too much help!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and throughout university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never solitary and how to have fun despite pressures from exams and deadlines.
