Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to start my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my prior shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with those facing similar experiences. So, what did I discover? I realized that making a bold move at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breaking activities and events will assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse group of people across the program and university, you’re sure to meet others who share your mindset.
An additional challenge was managing the workload and the difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels was certainly notable, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can impact your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek guidance from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They relate to our experiences and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referenced taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your well-being! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available. You can never receive too much assistance!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often irrational and can be eased by the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
