Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be your primary concern. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Today, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the best friends during my time at university and in my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, be yourself. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can impact your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies aided me through this, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, chances are others are grappling with it too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and comprehend the challenges students endure. They resonate with students and maintain consistent communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking chances – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me connect with the staff, which is priceless. There are various opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to make the most of the available support. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that apprehensions about university are frequently baseless and can be eased with the help available from staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never isolated, and I’ve come to appreciate myself despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
