Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what has this year imparted to me, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more nerve-wracking aspects of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room because I was too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively say that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was some casual conversation with other people in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter people likeminded.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your confidence; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey as you. If something isn’t clear, I can nearly guarantee that there are at least a few others who are equally confused. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students face challenges. They understand student struggles and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I talked about taking risks at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance being offered to you. You can never have an excess!
In a broader sense, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are almost always unwarranted and can be mitigated by the numerous support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and how to enjoy myself alongside stressful elements like exams and deadlines.
