By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This often emerges as one of the most frightening aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my new residence, just days ahead of the term starting, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to go out and introduce myself. Now, I can confidently share that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in similar predicaments. So, what did I internalize? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned the importance of being authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the rigors of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a challenging environment can put a strain on your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re clueless about something, it’s nearly guaranteed that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This segues into my next point. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They truly want you to thrive and understand that students encounter difficulties. They are sympathetic towards students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role helped me connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s among the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this area of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much help!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are mostly baseless and can be alleviated with the support options from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to enjoy myself even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
