Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be your primary concern. On my initial day moving into the dorms, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, far too shy to step out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with brief conversations with others facing similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking events designed to facilitate interactions with others. Moreover, if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your interests.
Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can impact your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others don’t either. Thus, seek assistance. This might be the most essential lesson from the first year. Ask for help from both peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students endure. They sympathize and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our challenges. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking risks – I indeed took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your well-being! My key takeaway is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year revealed to me that apprehensive feelings about university are often baseless and can be eased through the support provided by faculty and students. It demonstrated that I’m never solitary and how to find enjoyment amidst challenges like exams and deadlines.
