By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. This plunge into the unfamiliar was far from my previously shy and reserved nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! Yet, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating tasks was forming friendships. This is often among the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you are a prospective student, it could be a significant worry. On my first day while moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say I have forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I gather? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse crowd across the course and university, you are bound to meet like-minded people.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you can’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are in the same situation. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out for help from peers and staff!

This leads me to my next point. The staff within Materials are exceptional. They are committed to your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They understand students’ challenges and keep in constant touch with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with staff members, which is exceedingly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My principal takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support accessible from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
