A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and withdrawn self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often one of the most nerve-wracking facets of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be among your highest concerns. On my initial day moving into the dorms, just a few days before the semester started, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step outside and introduce myself to others. Nevertheless, reflecting from where I sit now, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it only took a bit of casual conversation with others facing similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? It’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, there’s no need to fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and activities will be available to assist you in forming connections with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be genuine. With a diverse range of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to locate individuals who share your interests.

Another obstacle was managing the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was indeed a significant leap from A-level studies, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes challenge your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. Several factors aided me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is encountering similar challenges. If you aren’t grasping a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I spoke of taking risks earlier – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it truly is one of the best moves you can make for yourself! My primary lesson regarding this facet of university life is to seize the assistance provided. You can never overdo it!

In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the plethora of support options available from staff and fellow students. It has made me realize that I am never alone, and it’s illustrated how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
