Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

In October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was preparing to begin my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into uncharted territory was not something my previously introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome aspects of beginning university, and if you’re considering attending, it may be one of your foremost concerns. On my first day of moving into my dormitory, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all thanks to striking up casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always the best route. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking chances and events to help you engage with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a variety of people across the course and university, you’re sure to find individuals like yourself.

An additional challenge was the workload and complexity of the subject matter. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel like you don’t measure up. A few factors assisted me during these moments, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly desire for you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They resonate with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the latter part of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned taking risks at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is very beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the support being offered. You can never have too much!

On a broader scale, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are usually unfounded and can be mitigated by the plethora of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has also shown me how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
