Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a hopeful student reading this, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too nervous to go out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here now, I can assertively say I’ve made some of the closest friends I’ve ever known, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, all through engaging in light conversations with others in the same boat. So, what have I realized? I discovered it’s always beneficial to take risks at the start of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can choose one thing to be, be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals at the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. There was undeniably an elevation from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me to push through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you struggle with something, I can nearly assure you there are others who do as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Ask your peers and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I made one at the year’s beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s definitely one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are often misplaced and can be eased by the various support systems accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
