Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I realize it has been a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and endless enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most formidable hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it may be one of your top worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here now, I am pleased to assert that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships I have ever known, here at this institution and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breakers and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, it should be your authentic self. With such a diverse array of people across the program and the university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, with an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes take a toll on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something unclear, I can almost assure you there are others who are equally puzzled. So, reach out for assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to internalize during the first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are committed to your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take a chance at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous moves you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to take full advantage of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that the anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
