Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable moments! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was the task of forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements when commencing university, and for prospective students, it may be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my residence, just days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the entirety of the day secluded in my room, too overwhelmed to step out and meet others. However, today, I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all commenced with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I discovered that taking a chance at the outset of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and activities to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and campus, you’re certain to find peers who resonate with you.

Another significant challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find a concept puzzling, I can almost assure you that there are others grappling with it too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding to students and keep lines of communication open with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I spoke of taking leaps – I did make one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My main lesson from this facet of university life is to seize the support offered to you. You can never have an excess of assistance!

In a broader sense, this year has illuminated that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the vast array of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I am never isolated, and it has demonstrated to me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
