Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my once-timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained in this past year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of starting university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it might be a primary concern of yours. On my inaugural day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term kickoff, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, both at this university and within my program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I come to learn? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take that initial leap at the year’s onset. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that above all, you should be yourself. With a diverse range of individuals throughout the program and university, you are sure to meet people who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a marked increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always a boost for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that we are all navigating the same challenges. If something remains unclear, I can almost assure you that others are grappling with it too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to embody in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask your peers and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They truly wish for your success and comprehend that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referenced taking leaps previously – I did take one at the year’s inception by serving as a year well-being representative. This role permitted me to establish rapport with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
