Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of self-discovery, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was making new friends. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be your primary concern. On my initial day moving into my dorm, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly state I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with fellow students in similar situations. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that it is always advantageous to take a risk at the onset of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to help you engage with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, be genuine. There are so many unique individuals across the program and the university; you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a notable increase in difficulty compared to A-levels, and in some respects, it felt like an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be a blow to your confidence; you may observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is encountering similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you there are others who are equally confused. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to embrace in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier the importance of taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s certainly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for your own well-being! My key takeaway from this segment of university life is to capitalize on the assistance being offered. You can never have too much of it!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and while in university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the multitude of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary, and it has equipped me with the ability to relish my experiences alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
