Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. As a first-year student on the cusp of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering, stepping into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is indeed one of the more fearsome parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be among your top worries. On my initial day moving into my dorm, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities will arise to help you forge connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody anything, be authentic. With such a variety of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the academic workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first semester to the second. Being placed in such an environment can wear on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me overcome that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who don’t as well. So, seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Pursue assistance from your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to flourish and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully benefit from the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to connect with staff, and it definitely ranks among the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has demonstrated that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated by the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never solitary, and taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst stresses like exams and deadlines.
